JOB TITLE:                    Special Education (SPED) Paraprofessional

 

FLSA STATUS:               Non-Exempt

 

REPORTS TO:                Principal and Classroom Teacher

 

SALARY:                        Depending on experience (Level 4)

 

MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:

 

  1. An Associate's degree from an accredited institution or completed 60 semester hours of college/community college coursework
  2. Experience working with special needs students, preferred
  3. Public school experience working with students, preferred

 

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB:

Under direct supervision from a certified teacher, performs specialized work by assisting teachers in instructing and directing the activities of students to provide a well-organized, smoothly functioning classroom environment.  Assists school administrators and staff with various administrative and clerical functions as requested.

 

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

 

  1. Assists students with exercises and class activities; concentrates efforts with small groups of students and individuals as needed.
  2. Lifts students from their location to changing table.
  3. Changes students' diapers and clothes.
  4. Toilet trains students.
  5. Sits and stands frequently, depending on students' locations and activities.
  6. Compiles, prepares, and organizes materials/classroom for instruction and activities.
  7. Assists in cleaning and storing materials after activities and use.
  8. Reinforces all knowledge and skills taught by the classroom teacher.
  9. Models proper behavior and play.
  10. Assists teacher by recording daily attendance, grading assignments, recording and/or analyzing test scores/grades; substituting as needed; setting up special projects; escorting children to other areas of the school; monitoring student behavior; packing/unpacking student communication folders; running errands within school, etc.
  11. Supervises and assists students when unloading and loading buses, in the halls, on field trips, during testing, during lunch, and on school grounds.
  12. Assists individual children with special needs and/or in need of special attention.
  13. Coordinates and/or participates in special programs or projects, as assigned.
  14. Maintains a clean, orderly classroom.
  15. Attends staff meetings as required; participates in professional development.
  16. Receives and responds to inquiries and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
  17. Keeps abreast of developments in curriculum and instruction.
  18. Operates a variety of equipment, such as a computer, printer, copier, calculator, telephone, audio-visual equipment, laminating machine, binding machine, refrigerator, and stove.
  19. Uses arts, craft, and instructional supplies and materials.
  20. Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals in a professional manner.
  21. Adheres to the laws of South Carolina; the requirements and regulations of the South Carolina Board of Education; the policies, rules, and regulations adopted by the Jasper County Board of Education (Board); Finance Dept. guidelines and procedures; and JCSD procedures, including Civility Procedures.
  22. Completes any other duties as assigned by Supervisor, Teacher, and/or Superintendent.
